THE PORTRAIT OF BILLYBOY* BEHIND THE PORTRAIT OF BILLYBOY*"130cm×130cmのシルクスクリーン。ビリーボーイとララによる「ミドヴァニィイズム」絵画作品の最新作である。マンガチックなまん丸な目と真一文字に結んだ口は、おどけた時のビリーボーイにそっくりだ!

"THE PORTRAIT OF BILLYBOY* BEHIND THE PORTRAIT OF BILLYBOY*" .. COPYRIGHT 2009 BILLYBOY* & LALA, STRICTLY FORBIDDEN TO USE THIS IMAGE WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE ARTISTS.

IDENTITY "WAS BILLYBOY* BARBIR'S BE-ATCH?"

The Swiss-based artists BillyBoy* & Lala have been invited by Flux Laboratory to share their point of view on the theme of "Identity". They have chosen the principle of an installation with a performance and lecture.

BillyBoy* will read in exclusivity a chapter from his autobiography entitled "My American Family, In One Era, Out The Other" (soon to be published) about the notion of identuty and identification, the perceived image and the effect of stereotyped modeles imposed by merchandising and advertising from the 1960s until today.
More particulaly, this chapter is dedicated to BillyBoy*'s own experience with the Barbie* doll and Mattel corporation and his knowledge of doll history.

This lecture includes an original choregraphy with dancers wearing trompe-l'oeil knit outfits inspired by classic Barbie outfits, created by BillyBoy* in 1984 on an original 2008 soundtrack by BillyBoy* (Two tracks featuring BillyBoy* are included in Lala's album "Succes damnes - The lost album" Dinemec Records 2009). It also includes rare archive visuals and documents, as well as the newly released video of Lala's song "Edie Superstar".

The art installation is comprised of 30 new "Mdvaniiism" artworks by BillyBoy* and Lala.

In paris in 1984, while working on the exciting project of his "Barbie Retrospective" and New Theater of Fashion". BillyBoy* was inspired to create a series of unique fashion statement-artworks, in the witty style of his New York Surreal Couture creations.

These ensembles which were meant to be worn as "after-ski leisure body suits for Gstaad" are paying homage to the great Elsa Schiaparelli and her historic sweaters with trompe-l'oeil designs which encountered a vivid success in the late 1920s and started her carrer.

BillyBoy* adopted the trompe-l'oeil effect on iconic Barbie outfits: one-piece bathing suit in black and white stripes from 1959, entirely knit is contrasting with the rosy pink of the rest of the body, including mittens imitating Barbie's hands, with a detached thumb.

This ensemble was worn by BillyBoy*'s friend Norris Church Mailer, spouse of Norman Mailer, in a museum show exhibition in New York in the 1980s. It also was part of the exhibition "Fashion and Surrealism" at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in the early 1990s.

Also featured, the famous "Resort Set", which is houmorously reproduced in knit with its built-in white shorts and black and white striped top, with its red jacket (removable and lined in red acrylic fur for a "vin chaud en terrasse"), also with mitten gloves.

Two other outfits to evolve in the direction where Barbie would never go: the scandalous monokini bathing suit with long thin straps, Rudi Gernreich from the 1960s, and another entirely striped outfit that would make her look like a cosmic bee, which has been worn my BillyBoy* for mondaine events and television appearances. Resin "Nipple" brooches by Surreal Bijoux Paris, "Cartoon Eye Glass Wear" by BillyBoy*, both from the 1980s.
